Wall of fish

My client asked me to direct a workshop project leading her family and friends in making mosaics. We worked together on a gorgeous summer day to build this wall of mosaic fish outside their beautiful house on the waterfront in Sooke BC.

Conceptual Continuity

I started this commission with a general musical and instrumental theme. My client gave me carte blanche but knowing him and his family well influenced my choice of direction. Blue was certain, shape and perspective eminent and seeing the “Picasso: Guitars, 1912–1914″ show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City gave this piece its final form. I found and applied some 1970s decals and embossed some pieces of the mosaic with a wood grain pattern to symbolize the organic origin of the instruments in their contemporary environment.

Hand-built mosaic by Isa Sevrain. Dimensions: 22x50 inches. 2011. Sold/private collection.

Taoscany — Alcove Commission

I worked closely with my clients to design, hand-build and install two large mosaic pieces in alcoves on either side of the entrance foyer staircase in their home on Beach Drive in Victoria BC.

At the request of my clients, I created a landscape where Taos, New Mexico, and Tuscany meet in a dance of opposition. The reds and greens confront and complement each other while veils and beads of blues accentuate by cooling the fire of this dream landscape.

Buddha for a wedding

This Buddha was commissioned to be a wedding gift for a couple who shared a strong spiritual commitment and different religious beliefs. They wanted a piece of art to remind them that it is possible “to keep it together,” to stay together despite the turmoil, struggle and differences that life brings.  I tried to give to their piece a grounded and solid sense of cohesiveness as I integrated the symbols of their individuality.  The Buddha is at the centre of the image, anchored in a powerful life stream.
